Rev. Samuel Emery (1670-1724) became the first resident minister in Wells in 1698. He enslaved a woman named Violet.
"Rev. Samuel Emery owned one [enslaved person] named Violet." - Bourne, p. 408
"Samuel Emery graduated Harvard University in 1691. When he came to Wells cannot be determined, but he had located himself here as early as 1698 ... [by which time] He had gained the good will of the people" and been appointed resident minister. - Bourne, p. 284
Rev. Samuel Emery lived from 1670 to 1724. No record has been located that indicates what happened to Violet, and whether she was part of an estate left to his son, Samuel Emery (1698-1755). However there is a clear record that his grandson, Samuel Emery (1727-1780) also enslaved an individual who was included in his 1780 estate.
