John Foster

Status (enslaved, free or both): free

Town: Kennebunkport

Known dates: 1949-1988

John Foster worked for the Colony Inn in Kennebunkport and Florida for at least 40 years.

In 1988, John Foster was 75 years of age, and the senior Bellman at the Colony Inn, having worked summers there since 1949. In the winter season, he worked at the Colony Inn in Florida.

Presumably there were many other Black staff at the Colony (and other resorts). In the article, he mentions "Haskell who had been coming up to Maine with John from Florida for 15 years now," though no one in the article is identified as White or Black. The photo of John is all that identifies him.
