The 1900 Census for Kennebunk lists Granier(?) R. Devane in his own household, Black, age 50, POB: NC (and parents both NC as well), occ: woodcarver, and married for 6 years.
Since he was born in North Carolina in 1849, he may well have been enslaved in his youth.
