Charles Howard was the father and head of household of a family of 4 listed in the 1880 Kennebunk census. He had been listed as "Black" in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses. He had been born in Louisiana in ~1830.

The 1880 Census for Kennebunk listed Charles Howard as the head of a household of 4, a Black man age 48, POB: Lousiana; occupation: basket making. Also listed: wife Abagail, and daughters Abbie M and Margret

Charles and Abigail had been listed in the 1860 Orono census as Charles (32, Black, teacher, birthplace Louisiana) and Abigail (22, birthplace Maine).

The family was listed in the 1870 Milbridge, Maine census as "Charles (35, Black, laborer), Abigail L (30, Mulatto), Annie S (9, Mulatto), Alice (5, Mulatto), and Margaret (2, Mulatto)"

Having been born in Louisiana circa 1832, Charles may well have been enslaved in his childhood.
