Town: Kennebunkport

Known dates: 1877, 1879, 1880, 1884

The 1880 Census for Kennebunkport listed Benjamin Hulse and Emma J Hulse in the household of Alex and Elizabeth Martin. Benjamin: Black, 37, carpenter, POB: FL. Emma: White, 17, housekeeper, POB: Maine.

Benjamin and Emma were married in Kennebunk Nov 24, 1877. They divorced in Sept 1884 due to Adultery with Benjamin as the libelant. Benjamin was residing in Dover, NH, and Emma in Boston, at the time of the divorce filing.

Benjamin was listed as Black and Emma as White, so they had what was then perhaps fairly uncommon: an interracial marriage.

The attached excerpt from the Eastern Star of Feb 21, 1879 is likely for Benjamin Hulse.
